Þe Wode Hath Teth opens with smoke and ash. The astringent sharpness of juniper berries cuts through the opening like cold air streaming through the embers of a dying fire. Mineral notes and pine give it an icy, brittle quality. The smoke is dry, sharp, and scorched, without the familiar warmth of a campfire. 

At the heart, black pepper and carrot seed break through the resinous facets of gurjun, earthy and distinctive like roots torn from frozen ground. Cypress intensifies the astringent woodiness, while osmanthus adds a subtle floral accent. Spice, resin, and dark roots combine in an angular olfactory portrait that reveals the forest in its rugged, primal form.

Over time, the composition grows deeper and more sensual. Oakwood, fir resin, moss, and hints of mushrooms evoke the damp darkness of the forest floor. Labdanum and vetiver bring a warm, resinous earthiness, while patchouli and an animalic musk accord heighten its wild character. Cool bark, damp moss, and lingering smoke stand in tense contrast to this dark, animalic warmth.

Þe Wode Hath Teth is not a romantic forest scent. It doesn’t evoke a peaceful walk among fir trees, but an ancient, untamed forest where humans are strangers. The blend of sharp smoke, icy minerality, resins, and damp earth feels rugged, restless, and mysterious. It is the scent of a place where something might be lurking behind every tree.

The forest has teeth

The name Þe Wode Hath Teth means “The Forest Has Teeth.” It draws on an archaic language that leads straight into the dark world of Robert Eggers’ Werwulf. In this world, the forest is no peaceful refuge. It is vast, brutal, and indifferent to the people who enter it. It was already there long before the first village was founded—and it will still be there long after it has disappeared.

It is the dead of winter. The forest breathes beneath a blanket of snow, its black branches reaching into the icy air. Juniper smoke drifts through the branches. In Heretic’s story, the wood was burned in ancient rituals to keep wolves away. Beneath the snow lie resin, rotting wood, and damp roots. Dark moss clings to the oak bark like an animal’s fur.

Something stirs somewhere among the trees. The forest is silent, yet nothing about it seems peaceful. It is older than the people who fear it, and seems to possess a desire of its own, one that can never be satisfied. Here, beyond the last houses, familiar rules lose their meaning. Here, a person can become something else.

For Douglas Little, this very idea was crucial. He did not want to create yet another fragrance that evokes the comforting effect of a walk in the woods. He was fascinated by the forest as it might have existed before fairy tales: a dangerous place full of ancient fears, whose darkness cannot be seen through. Fir balsam forms an important part of the composition, accompanied by a sharp, charred note that strips the fragrance of all comfort.

Þe Wode Hath Teth translates this idea into perfume. The smoke speaks of rituals, the rugged woods and roots of the unforgiving landscape, the moss and animalic notes of something living, hiding in the undergrowth. It is not the scent of the werewolf itself, but the smell of its world. The forest that sees the transformation coming. The forest that bares its teeth.

The three witnesses

Following their collaboration on Nosferatu, Heretic Parfum, director Robert Eggers, and Focus Features have created another extraordinary fragrance collection. This time, it accompanies Eggers' horror film Werwulf, set in 13th-century England and opening in US theaters on December 25, 2026.

Heretic founder and perfumer Douglas Little spent almost two years exploring the world of the film. Ancient myths, medieval language, historical research, and creative exchanges with Robert Eggers all informed the development.

The result is three fragrances that embody different witnesses to a bestial transformation. Each preserves a different moment in the story unfolding beneath the changing moon. Together, they tell of the thin boundary between civilization and instinct, human and animal, memory and myth.

Þe Wode Hath Teth – The Forest. As the moon waxes, the story begins. Smoke, ash, resins, frozen earth, and dark woods evoke a wild, merciless forest where something begins to stir.

Werwulf – The Beast. Under the full moon, the beast awakens. Animalic musk notes, skin, resins, roots, and the impression of damp fur tell of the moment when the boundary between human and animal disappears.

Blodwode – The Memory. As the moon wanes, traces remain. Metallic, animalic, and resinous notes tell of what has happened. The forest has perceived everything—and forgets nothing.
