      Natural Facial Scrub

A facial scrub removes dead skin cells and can make the complexion look smoother and fresher right away. Depending on the formula, it works with fine exfoliating particles, fruit acids, or enzymes.

Mechanical scrubs contain small abrasive particles, such as finely ground olive pits, clay, or jojoba wax beads. Microplastic particles were also used for this purpose in the past; they have been banned as abrasive particles in the EU since October 2023. We explore the background in our journal article Plastic People – Microplastics in Cosmetics.

When massaged in, the exfoliating particles loosen dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. Their texture, the overall formula, and especially the pressure used during massage are key to gentle application. Scrubbing too hard can irritate the skin.

Special feature: Enzymatic or chemical exfoliants

Acid and enzyme exfoliants do not require mechanical scrubbing. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic or lactic acid, help loosen dead skin cells on the surface. Depending on their concentration, pH, and application, they can make the skin look smoother and more even.

Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), such as salicylic acid, are oil-soluble and are used particularly for oily skin prone to blemishes. They can help clear clogged pores. Here, too, concentration and skin tolerance matter.

Enzyme exfoliants contain ingredients such as papain from papaya or bromelain from pineapple. These enzymes break down protein bonds on the skin’s surface, making it easier to remove dead skin cells. Because no abrasive particles are needed, enzyme exfoliants can be a good alternative to mechanical scrubs - provided your skin tolerates the formula.

Natural Facial Exfoliants: Gentle and Effective

Whether mechanical, acid-based, or enzyme-based, the right facial exfoliant can smooth rough patches and make the complexion look more even. The key is not to exfoliate as intensely as possible, but to choose a method suited to your skin type.

Gentle care is especially advisable for sensitive skin. How often you should use an exfoliant depends on the product, the rest of your skincare routine, and how your skin responds. Exfoliating too often can worsen dryness and irritation.
